The Challenge: A Crisis We Can't Ignore
A Generation Struggling to Connect Face-to-Face

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a landmark advisory warning of a national epidemic of loneliness and isolation—particularly among youth. The report highlights how excessive screen time and the decline of real-life social interaction are fueling rising rates of anxiety, depression, and disconnection. It calls on communities to rebuild the social structures that support mental well-being through face-to-face connection.
As evidence continues to mount, parents, educators, mentors, and workforce leaders are witnessing the fallout: a generation shaped by screens is now struggling with communication, shortened attention spans, diminished problem-solving skills, growing disconnection, and rising emotional distress. Yet one of the most powerful signals for change is coming from the youth themselves.
According to a 2022 study from Common Sense Media, more than half of teens believe they spend too much time on their phones, and many report that screen use negatively affects their sleep, mood, and ability to focus. Similarly, a 2023 Pew Research Center report found that over 40% of teens have tried to cut back on screen time—many citing concerns about their mental health and digital habits.
The Challenge Faced Today
This generation isn't in denial—they're aware, and they're looking for a better way. What they need now are tools, opportunities, and guidance to help them reclaim real connection and rebuild essential communication skills.
That's where the Two@aTime Project comes in.
It empowers youth with the communication skills they need to confidently connect with others—skills like active listening, asking meaningful questions, expressing empathy, collaboration and finding common ground. Through engaging, face-to-face experiences, students learn how to build real relationships, strengthen emotional awareness, and enjoy the kinds of conversations that lead to deeper connection. Most importantly, the Two@aTime Project helps them discover how to create a healthier balance between their digital world and the in-person connections they truly desire.
